The territory of the present-day Georgia has been continuously inhabited, since the early Stone Age.
In its history the country experienced the periods of prosperity, as well as regression, until it was divided into several small political entities in the 16th century.
Georgia declared its independence in 1991; after the period of chaos, economic crises and inner-ethnic violence the situation finally calmed down in the end of 90s. After the Rose Revolution in 2003 the west-oriented government was elected and a series of reforms was launched. The government’s aims were to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and to return the separatist regions back to the central state.
